Christie’s will be selling a big pile of
Posters on the 14th of September.
The Christie’s poster auction shows the work of many artists whose output was mainly in the world of graphics and illustration, but in amongst these artists you can also find the names of painters who are better known for their “fine art”.
It’s interesting to note the poster work of Dorothea Sharp, Edward Wesson, George Clausen, Lamorna Birch, Norman Wilkinson and Paul Henry. There’s even a railway poster by Stanhope Forbes in there.
So many of these posters were produced for the travel industry that it’s inevitable that the work of Terence Cuneo should be well represented. Here’s one of his that (unusually) does not show a locomotive. At the resolution offered here, you will not be able to see his trademark mouse that he hid in every painting.

The Guinness Brewery, Terence Cuneo 1950
I once worked in a studio overlooking the Guinness brewery in Dublin, so I’m very glad to get this view of the interior. It shows the workers milking the large copper cows and banging the barrels with large hammers to scare the milk out.
The cows are fed on special beer delivered to them by the large tubes dangling from the ceiling. Magic.
More Cuneo soon…
