Following the previous post about Stanhope Forbes, and more particularly his beautiful canvas called “A Safe Anchorage” that showed Newlyn harbour at the moment that sunset gives way to dusk, I stumble upon this luminous harbour scene painted by Enrique Martinez Cubells y Ruiz; normally called Cubells.
It’s entitled “La Vuelta”De La Pesca”, or Home From The Catch.
It really has a very strong echo of Stanhope Forbes’ masterpiece, but Cubells has painted this harbour as a late evening/early night scene, lit by the glare of artificial light.
I can’t find out much about him, other than the fact he was a follwer of Joaquin Sorolla ( a Sorollista) along with several other artists following in Sorolla’s footsteps. Or his wake, given that he painted so many aquatic pictures.
Cubells’ dates are: (Born in) Madrid in 1874 and died in Malaga in 1947.
Other painters who saluted the Sorolla flag were José Mongrell, Cecilio Plá, and Eliseo Meifrén.
