This cigarette card illustrates the crisis in finding an affordable home in a time of steep rises in house prices. It is from an alphabetically arranged series of cards with a sports theme.
I presume that the (uncredited) copywriter and the illustrator were stumped when it came to finding a sport that began with the letter “I”, so they just decided to insert a card illustrating an Imbecile.
This card was produced in the happy, carefree days before brand managers and marketing gurus decided to make themselves necessary!
It dates from 1922
