Hans Bacher has punched his way through several bouts with Blogger, and we’ve watched him fill a few blogs full to bursting point in the last couple of years. We’ve followed him through art-attacks, mad-t-party, followed by it’s-a-wrap and then moving on to manila-envelope.
You’d think that would be enough for most people, but Hans just kept on spawning new blogs. Have you ever seen Darfsetwasmehrsein? Or what about bilderfabrik? Or Twelvefield? The man is even lining up blogs for the future, in case he runs up against a 300 picture limit….
The latest of Hans’ blogger manifestations is: Animation Treasures 1 . (He’s already lined up Animation Treasures 2, just like a Hollywood sequel.)
With this latest blog, Hans seems to be moving on to a whole new paradigm. He’s slowly working through his favourite animated films in his DVD collection, and through a painstaking re-assembly of a series of screengrabs, he manages to show a close approximation of the original background paintings with all the foreground characters and FX removed. It’s an amazing labour of love.

This picture shows how Hans builds up the panning background from a series of screengrabs…

Bugs Bunny Rides Again, showing Paul Julian’s beautifully sparse painting.
There’s an insider’s joke contained in this second Paul Julian piece -

Ken Champin was an animator with an extraordinarily long career at Warner Bros.
This image highlights a long standing tradition among layout and background artists of using the names of colleagues for shop names, book authors and so on. There’s a bg earlier in this same film that contains no fewer than 4 crew members’ names carved into a doorway, including Paul Julian’s own. (See this IMDB entry for details.)
