As part of their Masters of Cinema series, independent distributor Eureka Entertainment have recently published three DVDs featuring feature length films by the late French animator René Laloux.
Laloux’s work has championed sci-fi themes, and his skill and vision have created some amazing movies in his 44 year animation career.
His psychedelic sci-fi animated feature Fantastic Planet won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and it’s the first of Eureka’s Laloux releases.

More recently, Eureka have put out two more titles from this visionary animator.
Here are some images from Les Maîtres du temps (Time Masters) that he made with Moebius in 1982.
The latest of these 3 DVDs is Gandahar, from 1988
Based on an original story by Jean-Pierre Andrevon, and a huge hit in France at the time of its release, it combines Laloux’s famous imagination with that of animation designer Philippe Caza. Gandahar is a fascinating, adult animation which examines genetic mutation, the importance of organic farming, and urges a respect for nature that resonates today more than ever.
YouTube has a selection of clips from Laloux’s films here.
All these disks come laden with extras. Here’s the link again.
