Second Hand Animation

Déja vu, anyone?

As well as using live action reference as guides for animation moves, it seems that the Walt Disney Feature Animation artists weren’t above re-using old sequences in new films.

A visual blend of 2 frames from different animated features.
A low res mix of two almost identical frames from two different films.

A French animation fan has cut together this video with frame accurate comparisons and follow throughs of the shots. The moves and timing are uncannily similar, though the characters have been redesigned. Obviously.
Perhaps this was a management decision to cut costs, rather than the result of animators growing lazy.

A sure sign of the doom that followed for Disney’s animation studios. It’s clear that the innovative and daring spirit was gone after Fantasia. It’s grossly embarrasing really.

Hi William, I guess it must have saved them a bit of work. It’s a big contrast from tracing some drawings and re-using their underlying structures, to the modern day practice of whole data libraries full of motion capture movements and behaviours. I wonder how many times we have seen certain mocap moves acted by several different screen characters….
