What’s a boy supposed to do when a penguin turns up at the door?
Take it back to Antarctica of course.

This might mean having to row it all the way back….
Just don’t ask how it arrived in the first place, that’s all….
Above all, do not question how a penguin is supposed to row a boat using only stubby little wings. We’ll have to wait for the film to be released on Christmas Eve to find out.
The thorough impracticality of returning penguins to the Antarctic is shown by this picture taken during repatriation rehearsals….
That penguin isn’t even trying to help…
Adapted and Directed by Phillip Hunt at Studio AKA from a book by Oliver Jeffers, published by Harper Collins.
To be screened on Channel 4 this Christmas Eve and again on Boxing Day.

Absolutely fantastic! I’m currently doing a film and music degree at Staffordshire university and this animation has been real inspiration for me.
Just thought I’d leave a comment about the way you speak about this animation. I’ve literally just got back from watching this on TV and it’s one of the greatest animations ever. Easily on par with ‘The Snowman’.
It’s a beautiful story, and not just for kids, for adults too. I loved it, and it stirred up loads of emotions inside of me. Absolutely amazing animation!
I’ve just watched it too and it was stunning. The bit with the octopus nearly had me in tears and I’ve no idea why…
Absolutely stunning animation. Couldnt take my eyes off it! As Timbo said, the bit with the octopus was amazing. Wonder if it will be repeated, would love to see it again…
You must excuse my less than overwhelmed remarks about this film. I’d only seen the preview stills Now I’ve seen it a few times, I must heap praise on whoever was responsible for the animation and rendering of the water, which was treated as though it were the third main character in the film. Brilliant.
Unfortunately the Studio AKA site doesn’t give very full screen credits, so I can’t name the water genius. Nice music, too.
I absolutely loved this and will probably invite derision by saying that I thought the adaptation was actually better than the original book. The animation of the water was phenomenal and the dialogue / narration just perfect. Did they ‘borrow’ the octopus scene from the final scenes of the abyss when the alien city rises up from the ocean floor?
Does anyone know if this will be repeated at any time or be released on DVD?
I sneaked half an hour on Christmas Eve to watch this. A magical stillness in a very busy day. That night my mum died quite unexpectedly. Two days later I watched the repeat with my Dad as I thought it would be gentle and lovely for him & something we could enjoy together quietly – and so it proved. thank you so much
Debby, I’m sorry to hear about your Mother, and I’m glad you found comfort while sharing the film with your Dad.
wow. unbelievable. in a world full of aggressive, over the top characters, this is quite the most beautiful thing ive seen on tv for years. had me captivated. truly wonderful.
