There’s a special word in Danish that sums up the family / candlelit / warmth on show in this picture, but I’m damned if I can remember it! Whatever it is, Johansen has it down pat in this picture.
He was a big mate of Peder Severin Kroyer, and he’s second on the left in this picture.
Lovely picture very evocative of a bygone era, we particularly like it, as the older boy in the painting is so similar to our son Robert Payne. When we receive Xmas cards of this painting we always resolve to see the actual painting. Where is it currently hanging? private or public collection?
The painting is at the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen. I live in the US and would love to send Christmas Cards of this painting. Do you know where I can find them? Jeanne

This painting was in our encyclopaedia when I was a girl. I thought it was the best representation of the magic of light at Christmas.
Merry Christmas and Happy New 2010!
I wish you all the best Michael!:o)
I wish you a very Happy New Year, too, Andrei.
Let’s meet up in the next couple of weeks if you are here in UK.

@Frances Payne: It’s in a public gallery in Denmark, but I’m dashed if I can remember which one!.
